Peter Worsley  - Wingsail Experiments

Mark II

This is "Bluebird" - not the most beautiful of sailing craft, but constructed out of what was available at the time to test the effectiveness of the automatic wing angle of attack system.

In the MkII version the aft control surface is adjusted by a (confidential)  mechanical system connected to the main pivot.

As can be seen from the video below - it worked well, constantly working to maintain the wing at the most suitable angle for the direction the boat was going. In fact, the rig was so efficient that the boat could sail nearly directly into the wind.

This can be seen in the video by checking the small windvane
on the front of the boat.
