Peter Worsley - Wingsail Experiments
Mark I
This is "Bluebird" - not the most beautiful of sailing craft, but constructed out of what was available at the time to test the effectiveness of the automatic wing angle of attack system. In the MkI version the wing angle of attack is controlled by a separate windvane which adjusts the main wing angle of attack through a pulley drive. Click for further explanation This system worked well enough, but was abandoned in favour of the MKII version, because I could not conceive of any way it could be "parked" when not in use. The small windvane on the front of the boat gives true wind direction |
